Applying for an Apartment as an Exchange Student

All students who study at Rovaniemi can apply for an apartment from all DAS housing areas throughout the year. In August and September, new students have priority to receive an apartment offer. Please notice that DAS is not able to accommodate all new students in the beginning of the semester.

DAS recommends exchange students to apply for furnished apartments. DAS has furnished apartments in DAS Eero (Rantavitikka Jukola area, near universities), DAS Lauri (Rantavitikka Jukola area, near universities), DAS Rovala and DAS IX. The deadline for applying is always around the end of June (for autumn semester) or around the end of November (for spring semester). The deadline is informed in the information letter sent by the Universities to the formally accepted exchange student.

What if there is a specific type of an apartment I want?

If you have special preferences for your accommodation, please mark those preferences in the ‘additional information’ -section of your application, or send a brief email to dasaspa@das.fi. You can mention, for example, about allergies, smoking, your religion, if you use or not use alcohol, name of the friend you want to share the apartment with etc.

DAS tries to arrange people with the same interests in the same apartment but we cannot promise that we can fulfill all your wishes.

We ask for your preferences in the application but due to the large amount of applicants and limited amount of rooms/apartments it is not always possible to get the option you wished for. For example, you may be offered a room in a three-room apartment instead of a room in a two-room apartment, which you may have wished for. If you receive a housing offer like this, it means that your first choice was no longer available and this is the best available room/apartment for you.

Receiving an apartment offer

DAS will send you an offer by email after we have checked that you are accepted to study in University of Lapland or Lapland UAS. Our offers will be sent by email earliest in June/November. Please read your email actively so that the offer won’t expire. Make sure that your email address is correct and does not have any typos when you are sending your application.

If you decide to decline the offer, DAS is not obliged to send you another housing offer.

Check from the offer what kind of room you have been offered and act according to the directions in the offer. Remember to answer by the due date!

Apartment Types

DAS has different types of accommodation options:

a room in a shared apartment
an individualized shared apartment
a studio
a two-room apartment
a three-room apartment

Women and men live in separate shared apartments. If you would like to live with a friend or partner of a different gender, please indicate this in the "Additional information" section of the application.

Agreements for same apartments for students who are different gender will only be made by request and if the duration of the living for these students is similar. For example if both stay for the fall semester - living in same apartment is possible.

Room in a shared apartment

Room in a shared apartment stands for one bedroom for a single person in an apartment shared by other students. You will have your own private bedroom. You will share a kitchen, bathroom and possibly other common areas with other student in the same apartment. There are separate shared apartments for male and female students.

Shared apartments have a kitchen with stove/oven and refrigerator, usually one bathroom and toilet. In addition, some apartments may have a balcony.

Individualized shared apartment

Individualized shared apartment is a 2-room apartment in which each tenant has their own entrance, own room and own bathroom. The kitchen is shared. Women and men live in separate apartments. Individualized shared apartments can be found in Anninportti, Vellikellot DAS I, DAS II, DAS VII and DAS VIII.

Studio

Studio is a one room apartment. Size and shape can vary; there can also be a separate small bedroom. Always own bathroom. Mainly for one person only.

Two-room apartment

Some of the apartments are like shared apartments with two separate rooms; some are with bedroom, a living room and kitchen. Suitable for couples and families.

Three-room apartment

Two bedrooms and a living room and kitchen. Suitable for families. Only in DAS Kota, DAS I and DAS II.

Rent and other payments

A service fee of 50 € will be charged for all periodic tenancy agreements. The service fee is charged within the first rent payment to DAS.

The monthly payments at DAS include the basic rent per square meter + the utility fee + the furniture fee. Internet connection, laundry and the sauna hours are included in your basic rent. The utility fee (23€) includes payments for water and electricity (and heating). The furniture fee is collected in all furnished apartments and it is 21.00€ a month.

The monthly payments must always be paid in full. This means that even if you arrive later than the beginning date of your agreement or if you leave earlier than the ending date of your agreement, you must still pay the full monthly payment.
